Roman Quest
Convert between Roman numerals and numbers, find the largest numeral, and add numerals together. Start under 40 and climb to 3999. A new daily set is waiting.
How to play
- Each question is about Roman numerals. You might read a numeral, write a number as a numeral, find the biggest of four, or add two numerals.
- Numbers start small and grow through the set, from under 40 up to 3999.
- A wrong pick is greyed out and counted as a mistake, and you keep going until you find the right one. The clock stops after the last question.
- The daily set is the same for everyone and resets at 00:00 UTC. Practice mode has sets of 8, 12 or 20 questions.
Tips and strategy
- I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1000.
- A smaller symbol before a bigger one is taken away. IX is 9 and XC is 90. After a bigger one it is added, so XI is 11.
- Only I, X, C and M repeat, and never more than three times in a row. Four is IV, not IIII.
- To compare numerals, look at the leftmost big symbols first. A numeral that starts with C beats any that starts with L or X.
FAQ
- Why is there no zero?
- The Roman system had no symbol for zero, so every question uses numbers from 1 up.
- What is the biggest numeral used?
- MMMCMXCIX, which is 3999. Larger numbers need extra marks that are not used here.
- Are all the wrong options real numerals?
- Yes. Every option is a correctly written numeral of a different value, so you cannot rule one out by spotting a typo.
