Cipher Lock
Crack the secret code from a handful of clues. Each clue is a guess that tells you how many digits are right and how many are in the wrong place. A new lock every day.
How to play
- A secret code is made of different digits, with no digit used twice. Pick 3, 4 or 5 digits, or play the daily 4-digit lock.
- Each clue shows a guess and its result: how many digits are in the right place and how many are in the code but in the wrong place.
- Use the clues together to work out the one code that fits all of them, then type it in and press Try code.
- Stuck? A hint reveals the next digit of the code from the left, and each hint counts against your score.
Tips and strategy
- Start with a clue that says nothing is in the code. Those digits are gone for good.
- Compare two clues that differ by one digit to see whether that digit matters.
- After a wrong try, the list shows how many of the clues your guess fits. A real answer fits all of them.
- Digits never repeat, so a guess like 1 1 2 3 can be ruled out straight away.
FAQ
- Can there be more than one answer?
- No. Every lock is generated so that exactly one code fits all of the clues, and the extra clues are removed.
- Can a digit appear twice in the code?
- No. Every digit in the code is different, which is what makes the clues fully solvable.
- What counts as my score?
- The number of tries plus hints. Fewer is better, and your best is saved for the practice lengths.
