Pin the Place
Five famous places, one world map. Drop a pin where you think each one is and score up to 1,000 points by how close you land. A new set each day.
How to play
- You are given the name of a famous place and a small hint. Click the world map to drop a pin, or type a latitude and a longitude.
- Press Place pin to lock in your guess. The green dot shows the true spot and the dashed line shows how far off you were.
- Closer is better. A perfect guess is worth 1,000 points and the score falls smoothly with distance.
- There are five places in the daily round. Finish all five for your total, then share it, or play unlimited practice rounds.
Tips and strategy
- Use the hint. Knowing the continent or the country removes most of the world straight away.
- Remember that the map is a flat sketch, so places near the poles stretch out in distance. Think about latitude lines too.
- If you are stuck between two ideas, drop the pin between them. A middling guess beats a confident miss.
- Learn the coordinates of a few well-known cities and use them to judge the ones nearby.
FAQ
- How is the score worked out?
- It uses the real great-circle distance between your pin and the place, so it is accurate even across the whole world. Zero distance scores 1,000 and the score halves roughly every 1,000 km.
- Is the daily the same for everyone?
- Yes. Everyone gets the same five places on the same date, so you can compare totals.
- Is the map accurate?
- It is a rough hand-drawn outline of the continents, enough to aim with. Scoring uses true coordinates, not the picture.
